Breaking Barriers: UCalgary's Collegiate Recovery Week Revolution
Embracing a New Narrative
In an era where awareness around mental health is rising but still laden with stigma, the University of Calgary is setting a pioneering example. As part of Collegiate Recovery Week, they’ve embarked on a mission that not only acknowledges but celebrates those who are either in recovery or seeking recovery from addictions of various forms.
“Addiction doesn’t discriminate, and neither should we,” says Chelsie Graham, BSW’22. With such poignant words, the message is clear: recovery is personal, profound, and vital.
Nurturing a Culture of Support
Since 2010, the Association of Recovery in Higher Education has recognized Collegiate Recovery Week, and UCalgary is proud to showcase its commitment to reducing stigma around recovering students. By fostering a nurturing environment, they empower not just those in recovery but also the facilitators who drive the cause.
Chelsie Graham emphasizes, “If a staff member feels supported, they are inherently more driven to aid students effectively.” Her belief underscores the necessity of a strong community for successful recovery.
Exciting Events of Collegiate Recovery Week
At the heart of this initiative are a series of events that are as informative as they are engaging. Starting April 14, the campus will come alive with peer-recovery navigators distributing recovery-themed self-care kits via a mobile coffee cart. These kits, complete with wellness products, aim to ease and encourage the recovery journey.
UCalgary proudly invites its community to wear purple on April 15 to honor Collegiate Recovery Day. Moreover, a creative tie-dye event awaits those who love art therapy, with unique T-shirts and items to personalize.
A Showcase of Triumph
Highlighting transformation through story, the documentary “The Anonymous People” will be screened, shedding light on the experiences of over 23 million Americans living in long-term recovery. This powerful viewing takes place on April 16 and is open to all curious hearts seeking inspiration.
The week culminates in an open house event at the Recovery Hub, offering ample opportunity to delve into UCRC’s achievements and explore ongoing recovery endeavors. According to University of Calgary, this event is a conduit for dialog and learning, inviting attendees to question, understand, and contribute to the growing discourse on mental wellness in academic environments.
An Invitation to Join the Movement
With a renewed Community Mental Health and Well-Being Strategy, UCalgary remains committed to fostering an inclusive campus where all individuals can thrive. As the Community Mental Health and Well-Being Strategy suggests, true well-being is attained when individuals feel they belong, excel, and are supported.
If you or someone you know is navigating the waters of addiction or mental health challenges, UCRC’s doors are open at Yamnuska Hall. You are not alone; there is a community ready to walk with you on your journey to recovery.
