Community Living: A New Dawn of Inclusion in Owen Sound
A New Beginning at 1285 2nd Avenue East
Community Living Owen Sound & District (CLOSD) has taken a monumental step towards enhancing community engagement with the grand opening of their new Community Participation (CP) space. Located at 1285 2nd Ave. E., the facility was inaugurated on August 15 with a vibrant ribbon-cutting ceremony that echoed the excitement and hope for a future rich in inclusion and growth.
At the heart of this significant move is a commitment to providing nearly 200 adults with diverse abilities access to enriching, innovative programs that build skills, foster connections, and strengthen the community. Manager of Community Participation, Tammy Robertson, highlighted the intentional design of the new location, emphasizing its strategic placement beside City Hall in Owen Sound to ensure constant involvement in the community’s daily life.
Tailored Spaces for Individual Growth
The sophisticated design of the new facility reflects a deep understanding of the needs of its participants and staff. Equipped with a teaching kitchen, sensory room, and a dedicated coffee bar, it offers a warm and inviting atmosphere. For staff, improved amenities, like individual offices, enhance both work efficiency and comfort.
Robertson expressed enthusiasm for the positive change, acknowledging the community-focused approach that underpins their aspirations. “We’ve achieved a space that feels tailor-made for adults, providing a nurturing environment for learning and social interaction,” she stated.
Engaging Programs that Build Connections
CLOSD’s Community Participation programs serve adults funded by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS), focusing on personalized care and engagement. By offering diverse activities such as market visits, cooking classes, and volunteering, CLOSD ensures participants not only develop life skills but also forge meaningful connections within the community.
The benefits are far-reaching, from bridging social gaps and reducing isolation to enhancing communication and problem-solving skills. “Our mission is to create a space where every individual is empowered to live their best life,” said Robertson.
A Vision of Empowerment
The relocation signifies more than just a change of address; it’s a testament to CLOSD’s philosophy of inclusivity and empowerment. As the nearly 200 participants settle into their new home, the organization continues to innovate, crafting programs that align with its vision of a community where everyone is valued.
While the torch has been passed from their old location, the goodwill continues, as Robertson fondly remembers their previous downtown landlords and wishes them success in finding new tenants.
