Hackers were able to hack into accounts to log into Asian data centre support systems. Their clients include Apple, Amazon, BMW, Goldman Sachs, Microsoft and about 2,000 other companies.

Executives at the affected US companies said the stolen data allowed them to control who was allowed physical access to the servers.

The attackers put the data up for sale on the darknet for $175,000.
