Productivity Sep 14, 2025

In an inspiring step towards enhancing Nigeria’s livestock industry, the World Bank-assisted Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) recently trained over 80 veterinarians, para-veterinarians, and community animal health workers. Conducted across the 36 states and the FCT, this training marked a pivotal moment in improving strategies for disease detection, control, and eradication. Participants were equipped with state-of-the-art skills to tackle livestock health challenges, ensuring improved productivity and national response capabilities.

Building a Robust Shield Against Livestock Diseases

Dr. Sanusi Abubakar, National Project Coordinator of L-PRES, emphasized the essential role these frontline professionals play in safeguarding livestock health nationwide. Represented by Dr. Mustapha Mohammad in Abuja, Abubakar highlighted the training’s alignment with the Project Development Objective (PDO) focused on strengthening Nigeria’s livestock sector’s resilience. This initiative is integral under Sub-Component Three of the L-PRES Project, targeting crucial areas such as antimicrobial resistance control, TADs vaccination, and more.

A Nationwide Endeavor with a Unified Goal

The workshop served as a melting pot for professionals from diverse regions, nurturing collaboration and knowledge sharing. With representatives from each Nigerian state and the FCT, the spirit of unity and shared purpose was palpable. Participants left with reinforced skills in disease detection, surveillance, and risk communication—key components to enhance local and national livestock productivity.

Ensuring Future Resilience

Abubakar’s call to leverage this training as a platform for continuous professional development was echoed throughout the event. Acknowledging the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development’s unwavering support, he urged participants to channel their newly acquired skills into the broader mission of robust livestock disease control, enhancing community engagement in the process.

Sustaining an Ongoing Commitment to Livestock Health

The significance of this training extends beyond immediate skills application. It represents a robust commitment to sustaining livestock health and productivity in Nigeria. As stated in News Agency of Nigeria, investing in human resource development in animal health is pivotal to realizing the full potential of Nigeria’s livestock sector.

The L-PRES initiative is a testament to the power of collective action and international collaboration, fortifying the pillars of livestock productivity and resilience one trained professional at a time.
