Exciting Speed Limit Change: NZ's Northern Gateway Ramps Up to 110km/h
Transport Minister Chris Bishop has heralded a landmark moment for New Zealand drivers as the speed limit on part of the State Highway 1 (SH1) along the Northern Gateway Toll Road is set to increase to 110km/h from tomorrow. This decision comes after significant consultation and marks a shift aimed at improving travel efficiency and boosting economic productivity.
Economic Gains on the Horizon
The increased speed limit, while applicable for just a 5.5km section from north of Orewa to south of the Johnstone’s Hill Tunnels, is set to streamline the flow of more than 11,000 vehicles daily. With heavy vehicles making up about 9% of this traffic, the potential for enhanced logistics efficiency is substantial. Minister Bishop passionately asserts the importance of quick and safe travel to foster economic growth, drawing upon strong community support to validate the decision.
Strong Public Support
In a major consultation effort by the NZ Transport Agency, over 7900 submissions were gathered, with 93% of respondents supporting the increased speed limit. A remarkable 91% of the participants expressed strong endorsement, echoing widespread public belief in the positive outcomes of the change. The numbers speak for themselves, making a compelling case for the increased speed.
Road Safety Assured
Safety remains a top priority, with the Northern Gateway Toll Road boasting features such as dual lanes for secure overtaking, robust median separation, and a predominantly straight and wide alignment. These design elements, alongside upcoming safety improvements within the next 12 to 18 months, are pivotal in ensuring that the elevated speed limit does not compromise safety.
Enforcement and Current Limit
The police will maintain stringent enforcement of the new limit, with the speed temporarily dropping to 80km/h through the Johnstones Hill Tunnels to preserve safety standards. According to Driven Car Guide, there are currently no plans to amend the speed limit further on this section, maintaining a balance between speed and safety.
