The GitHub blog has reported that the repository rules feature has been launched in beta test mode. Their owners can now create entire rule sets to protect changes and keep branches in order.

For example, a repository owner can set a rule so that every change is followed by a mandatory comment, or so that only pairs of developers can make changes to a branch. This approach, the company believes, will help keep code clear of clutter and create an additional layer of security.

It is important to note that the list of rules can be viewed by any user with read permission, and only the editors and owner can change it. The company has prepared detailed documentation on how to work with the update.
