Recently, Google hosted a conference where it unveiled new features and outlined its future development plans. A key announcement was the integration of artificial intelligence into its search system. This development raises questions about its implications—both positive and negative.

The New Search Feature

Google's introduction of AI-driven search overviews, known as Google AI Overviews, which began operating on May 14, marks a significant shift in how information is searched online. Designed to help users quickly grasp a topic, these AI summaries compile information from various sources, including web pages in search results and Google’s own knowledge base. These overviews appear at the top of the search results page, above human-written content, based on Google’s Gemini language model. The information provided in these summaries is sourced from the web pages listed below them, which are cited as sources in the overview.

For example, if you type "how long does it take to bake a pie?" into Google, you will see an answer summarized in a few sentences generated by Gemini, followed by links to all the resources used. This allows users to verify the information by visiting the websites from which the data was sourced.

Who Will Be Affected?

Predicting the full consequences of such innovations is challenging, but some immediate effects can already be identified:

  1. Impact on Website SEO

If users find the information they need directly in the AI-generated overview, they are less likely to visit individual websites. This could lead to decreased traffic to those sites and potentially undermine efforts in search engine optimization.

  1. Impact on Content Creators

As people increasingly consume content generated by AI in search results, the demand for human-generated content may decrease. This could diminish opportunities for content creators to earn revenue and reduce their motivation to create new content.

  1. Impact on Content Consumers

While AI has advanced significantly, it still sometimes "hallucinates" or provides inaccurate information. This can mislead consumers who rely on the quality and accuracy of the information provided.

Can You Disable AI Overviews in Google?

As of May 2024, there is no built-in option to completely disable AI Overviews in Google Search. Google removed the ability to turn them off via Search Labs when the feature was fully deployed and has not offered a way to disable them since.

However, you can eliminate them using the "web filter" option in Google. Click the "more" tab right under the search bar and select "web" to see only traditional web search results without the AI overview. If you use Google Chrome, you can also find extensions specifically designed to hide AI overviews. These extensions work by altering the page code of search results to hide the AI overview section.

Therefore, if you use Chrome and prefer not to view AI Overviews, installing one of these extensions removes all AI-generated summaries from your Google search results. Always be cautious when installing extensions and use only those from trusted sources in the Chrome Web Store.

Conclusion

Google's integration of AI into its search engine is a transformative development with broad implications. While it offers enhanced search efficiency and accessibility of information, it also presents challenges for website traffic, content creators, and the accuracy of information consumed. As with all technological advancements, users and industry professionals will need to adapt to these changes.
