Innovative Collaboration Revives Culinary Equipment & Breathes Life into Student Learning

In a groundbreaking initiative, South Texas College (STC) has combined efforts between its Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT) and Culinary Arts programs to seize an exceptional learning opportunity. This collaboration extends beyond theory, providing AMT students with hands-on experience as they work diligently to repair culinary equipment, specifically 11 KitchenAid mixers, once thought to be out of commission.

A Perfect Blend of Knowledge and Practice

This partnership bridges the gap between different educational disciplines, simulating practical scenarios students might face in their career journey. Faculty members from both departments hailed the collaboration as a mutual advantage, not just for students, but also for the wider culinary and manufacturing industries. In a region where experts for such equipment are scarce, the potential for AMT students to fill that void is significant. Larissa Reinitz, a Culinary Arts faculty member, emphasizes the collaboration’s value: “Reaching out to the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Department, we thought that it was a great idea to give their students that mechanic experience…”

The transformation journey from classroom knowledge to real-world application begins with AMT students dismantling, diagnosing, and repairing components of the mixers, encompassing bearings, gaskets, motors, and gears. They grasp the mechanics behind a machine’s operation, which fuels confidence in tackling problems autonomously. Faculty member Kranzth Esparza states, “Our students have had no problem taking them apart and diagnosing all the electrical components step by step…”

Preparing for a Promising Future

This initiative not only sharpens technical skills but also provides an insight into potential career paths in industrial maintenance, robotics, and beyond. For soon-to-be graduates like Diego Cruz and Eric Senteno, the prospect is bright. They’ve gained insights into complex systems and foresee becoming integral contributors in their chosen fields. Eric notes, “This has given me the opportunity to just have a higher-level knowledge about how things operate in general…”
