Self-Improvement May 14, 2025

In a beacon of support towards healthcare, the President of Mongolia, Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, spearheaded a monumental shift in the healthcare sector by fostering the development and research endeavors of nurses. This announcement was made at the “Thank You, Nurses - 2025” Consultative Meeting held at the State Palace on May 12, timed with International Nurses Day.

Commitment to Nursing Excellence

During the assembly, President Ukhnaa underscored the immense contribution of nurses to public health and patient recovery. Recognizing their pivotal role, the Mongolian government has escalated efforts to elevate the nursing profession. By 2024, nurse salaries will see a significant rise, up to twice the rate since 2019, along with special incentives for those operating in demanding rural locations starting next year.

A New Epoch for Nursing Education

A landmark initiative revealed was the establishment of a Nursing Training, Research, and Healthcare Services Center in Arkhangai aimag. Concurrently, the construction of a “Nursing Education and Research Center” at the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences commenced, signaling a robust investment in advancing nursing education and research.

Enhancing Professional Conditions

The President emphasized holistic policy reforms aimed at strengthening the working conditions for nurses. Measures include fair remuneration, improved job security, and augmented quality and access to medical services, reflecting a committed trajectory toward health workforce sustainability.

National Movement and Global Standards

As part of the broader “Healthy Mongol” National Movement, Mongolia aims to align more closely with global healthcare standards. Despite the presence of over 15,000 nurses constituting 22% of the healthcare workforce, the density per capita remains below international averages. Nearly half of trained nurses exit the profession within four years, highlighting the urgency of these reforms.

Uniting for Change

The meeting also fostered dialogue on how nursing intersects with economic and social development. Mongolia joins the global community in celebrating three decades of International Nurses Day under the theme “Our Nurses. Our Future,” expressing its dedication to nurturing future care providers who are cradles of national health and global wellbeing.

According to Montsame, these initiatives reflect a strategic vision for insurmountable growth and resilience in Mongolia’s healthcare system, fortifying nurses as the backbone of health services.

This proactive stance by Mongolia sets an inspiring precedent, aiming to bridge gaps in nursing care, ultimately fortifying the nation’s health system and empowering its caregivers to thrive.
