OpenAI has discovered the source code for Point-E, a machine learning system that creates 3D objects from text cues. The AI can generate 3D models in one to two minutes on a single Nvidia V100 GPU.

Point-E does not create 3D objects in the traditional sense, but generates point clouds or discrete sets of data points in space that represent a three-dimensional shape. Point clouds are easier to synthesize computationally, but they don't encompass the details of an object.

Researchers note that Point-E point clouds can be used in making objects for the real world, such as with 3D printing, as well as in game development and animation workflows.
