The revolutionary "Easyturn" suspension will allow the car to turn around on the spot
The German-American company ZF, a manufacturer of automotive components, has introduced a new suspension technology concept. It is called "Easyturn," and its main task is to make maneuvering easier and simpler. The idea is to teach the suspension to turn the wheels to much larger angles than in conventional designs, up to 80 degrees.
For the commercial, Easyturn was installed on a BMW i3 with a default turning radius of 9.9 meters. This figure drops to 6.2 meters when Easyturn is active, allowing the car to make a spectacular turn in just one lane without using any tricks like "police turn". However, much more powerful advantage of Easyturn is the possibility of simplified parallel parking in narrow places, where you can't drive with standard angles of rotation of the wheels.
Alas, this is where the visible advantages of Easyturn come to an end. Obviously, such system is more difficult to maintain and repair, it is less resistant to loads. Easyturn requires very spacious wheel recesses. In addition, it cannot be installed on cars with rear-wheel drive, as it will lead to obvious problems when driving with such a turn.
Owners of cars with Easyturn are unwittingly tempted to squeeze into the narrow spaces that drivers of other cars have purposely left in order to be able to exit the parking lot on their own. And by doing so, they increase the likelihood that they will obstruct everyone else.
At this point, it's hard to say whether this is a concept or already a prototype. However, ZF is known as a major manufacturer of first-tier automotive components, with an annual turnover of $40 billion, so there is a chance that the novelty will go into production.
